Brushing & Flossing
Brushing: Step 1
Place a small amount of toothpaste on the brush. Start up along the gum-line and brush at an angle to get up under the bracket and wire. Use short strokes to concentrate on 1-2 teeth at a time.
Brushing: Step 2
Then move to the top side of the teeth and brush down at an angle to get down under the wire and bracket from this side. Again, use short strokes for 1-2 teeth at a time.
Brushing: Step 3
After finishing the top teeth, move down and do the lower teeth the same way. Be sure to get along the gum-line. That is the most commonly missed area which leads to the "white spots."
Brushing: Step 4
Then, brush the back sides and tops of the teeth to get the rest of the tooth surfaces. You should finish by brushing off the top surface of your tongue and roof of your mouth.
Flossing: Step 1
To floss, you must first place floss through the lumen of the floss threader. Then, run the floss threader up under the wire to pull the floss through.
Flossing: Step 2
Once you get the floss up under the wire, pull one side of the floss all the way through while holding the other side still. You can now release the floss from the floss threader.
Flossing: Step 3
Pull the floss through the contact between the teeth and angle toward one tooth in front and back.
Flossing: Step 4
Now you can slide the floss up along the side of that tooth up under the gum-line. When you finish that side of the tooth, angle toward the contacting tooth and do that side of that tooth. Pull the floss out of your mouth and use the floss threader to move onto the next teeth.
With good brushing and flossing technique and monitoring what you eat and drink, you can have healthy, straight teeth after your orthodontic treatment is complete.
If you DO NOT brush and floss properly or drink too many sodas, you could end up with these permanent "white spots" in your teeth. They do not go away!
